안녕하십니까? 다년간의 대학교수 경험을 살려서 아프고 병든 환자분의 척추 질환을 고쳐 드리고자 최선을 다하겠습니다. 원칙과 실력, 환자분의 아픔을 어루만져 드릴 수 있는 인성을 갖추고자 부단히 노력하겠습니다.

외교관에서 의사로 진로를 바꾸다

고등학교 때 학생회장을 하며, 한때 외교관을 꿈꾸었습니다. 100살이 넘으신 친할머니의 임종을 지켜보면서 인간의 삶과 죽음을 깊이 생각한 뒤, 재수생 시절 의사가 되기로 마음먹었습니다. 병리를 전공하신 할아버지와 이비인후과 전문의인 아버지의 영향으로 병리학이나 이비인후과를 전공하려 하였으나, 척추와 관련된 의료에 매료되어 정형외과로 진로를 바꾸었습니다.

서울대학교병원에서 수련을 받다

저는 측만증의 세계적인 대가이신 이춘기 교수님과 척추 종양, 척추관 협착증으로 저명하신 장봉순 교수님, 그리고 세계적인 경추 전문가인 염진섭 교수님 밑에서 사사하였습니다.

염진섭 교수님은 외래나 회진 때는 한없이 인자하신 분이시지만, 수술방에서 “경추 수술은 1mm의 오차만 생겨도 전신 마비를 일으킬 수 있으므로 매 순간 방심하면 안 된다.”라는 가르침 속에서 혹독한 수련을 받았습니다. 수술/비수술 구분, 꼼꼼한 사전 수술 계획, 논문 잘 쓰는 법, 그 이외에 의사로서의 기본적인 자질이나 불법적인 리베이트를 받지 않는 윤리 교육을 철저히 받았습니다.

서울대학교병원 외에 양산부산대학병원, 고신대학교병원, 분당서울대학교병원에서 다년간 교수를 역임하면서 다양한 경험을 하였습니다.

세계 유수 병원에 연수를 다녀오다

중학교 1학년을 미국 California주의 Irvine시에서 다닌 적이 있어서 남들보다 영어에는 자신이 있었습니다. 단순히 병원에 가서 하루 정도 사진만 찍는 것이 아닌 미국의 Rush 대학병원, Northwestern 대학병원, Harvard 대학병원에서 최소 침습 척추 수술을 연수하였고, 이탈리아의 Bologna대학병원에서 줄기세포치료와 최소 침습 수술과 척추 종양 수술을 장기 연수하였습니다.

타지에 홀로 떨어져서 밤에 한식을 먹으면서, 외로움과 고향에 대한 향수를 달랬습니다. 낮에 수술방에서 배운 것을 집으로 돌아와 틈틈이 노트에 적으면서 수술법을 익힌 것이 아주 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 최근에는 미국 프로 운동선수들이 다치면 찾아가는 Cedars Sinai병원의 Watkins클리닉을 방문하여 체계적인 재활치료를 배우고 왔습니다.

공감하고 봉사하는 의사가 되고 싶다

제가 대학교수 시절에 제 외래 진료를 보기 위해 많은 환자분들이 오랜 시간을 기다리셔야 했습니다. 대기 환자가 많다 보니, 어떨 때는 3분 진료, 때로는 30초밖에 진료할 수 없었습니다. 고령의 환자분들이 여러 번 되물으시면 짜증도 많이 부린 것 같습니다.

그 당시, 환자분들은 저를 찾아서 오신 것이 아니라, 대학병원의 이름을 보고 오신 분이 많았음에도 겸손하지 못했던 것 같았습니다. 가장 좋은 의사는 뛰어난 실력과 더불어 환자의 말에 진심으로 귀 기울여 주는 의사, 어떻게 하면 대기시간을 줄여드릴지 노력하고 따듯한 말 한마디와 함께 손 한번 잡아 드리는 공감하는 의사라고 생각합니다.

의사라는 직업이 사회적으로 많은 혜택을 받은 만큼 지역사회의 가난한 환자, 미혼모 그리고 외국인 노동자를 돕고 있습니다. 하나님으로부터 받은 치유하는 달란트를 국내와 해외 의료 선교를 통해 봉사하고 있습니다.
